Two centuries ago Thomas Jefferson suggested that a “wall of separation” would resolve the age-old tension between church and state. Recent events, domestic as well as international, suggest that his solution may not be possible or even desirable. We see this as clearly in the maneuvering of elective politics in America as in the conflicts roiling the Middle East and in the struggle for religious freedom in China. For this series we have invited scholars to share their reflections about this conflict both in the past and in the present. We intend this series to inform us about issues rather than to propose any solutions.

These lectures are co-sponsored by the Princeton Adult School and the Community Auditing Program of Princeton University’s Office of Community and State Affairs.
